Deva has written a thesis, which, I would unhesitatingly say, is a contribution to comparative criticism. It is a difficult thesis to write, for there is no model for such an undertaking in Kannada or English, so far as I know. Sri. Deva Ramachandra has applied his mind creatively to the task before him, shedding new light on the problem of translation in relation to two distinctly different cultures. Shri. Ramachandra is able to discuss adaptations with new insights, also because of his deep knowledge of the original plays of Shakespeare. His insights are not narrowly literary; there is always a complex understanding of the cultural and political. issues which Shakespeare as well as his translators face in their respective cultures. Yet nowhere does his analysis become purely sociological and predictable. The thesis is worth publishing in English as well as in Kannada translation. The work is bound to be a contribution to the problems of translation in comparative literature.
Kudure Bantu Kudure (The Horses) is a good play with natural characters, and colloquial dialogues. It depicts the way our people face reality…The characters who ignore the present and trust the future or the past are powerfully portrayed. It captures our mind because of the naturalness of the characters and the atmosphere. The use of the shooting of our film scenes which bear no relation to reality as the symbolic background is very appropriate. ರಾಮಚಂದ್ರದೇವ ಅವರ ಇತರ ಕೆಲವು ಕೃತಿ ಕುರಿತು ಉತ್ತಮ ಕಲೆಗಾರಿಕೆ, ಸಹಜವೆನಿಸುವ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು, ವಾಸ್ತವಿಕತೆಯನ್ನು ನಮ್ಮವರು ಎದುರಿಸುವ ವಿವಿಧ ಬಣ್ಣಗಳನ್ನು ಚಿತ್ರಿಸುವ ಸಹಜ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳ ದಿನನಿತ್ಯದ ಆಡುಮಾತಿನ ಶೈಲಿಯು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ನಾಟಕ “ಕುದುರೆ ಬಂತು ಕುದುರೆ” ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿದವರು ನಾಟಕವನ್ನು ಆಡಿಸಿದವರು ನರಸಿಂಹನ್ ಅವರು ರಂಗಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆಡಿದ ನಾಟಕಕ್ಕೂ ಲಿಖಿತ ನಾಟಕಕ್ಕೂ ಮಹತ್ತ್ವದ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಗಳಿವೆ ಎಂದು ನಾಟಕ ಲೇಖಕರು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಕೋಲನ್ನು ಕುದುರೆ ಎಂದು ಆಡುವ ಹುಡುಗ, ಮನೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೋದ ಗಂಡ ಮತ್ತೆ ಬರುವ ಎಂದು ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿಸುವ ತಾಯಿ, ವಿಧಾನಸೌಧಕ್ಕೆ ವರ್ಗ ಮಾಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಕ್ಲಾರ್ಕ್, ಅಪ್ಪ ಮತ್ತು ಭಾವಿ ಮಾವ ಲಕ್ಷಾಧೀಶರೆಂದು ಹೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಪೋಸ್ಟ್ ಮ್ಯಾನ್, ಮತ್ತು ಹತ್ತಿರದಲ್ಲಿ ಶೂಟ್ ಆಗುತಿದ್ದ ಸಿನಿಮಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೀರೋ ಪಾತ್ರ ತನ್ನದು ಎಂದು ನಂಬಿಕೊಂಡ ನಟ ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಕನಸಿನ ಜಗತ್ತು, ಈ ಕಡೆ ಬರ್ತಿದೆ ಶೂಟಿಂಗ್ ಕಾಣಿಸ್ತು ಅವರ ವೈಭವ ನೋಡ್ತಿದ್ರೆ ಎಲ್ಲ ಮರೆತೋಗಿಬಿಡ್ತದೆ. ಪು.೧೭ ಎನ್ನುವ ಕ್ಲಾರ್ಕ್ ಎಲ್ಲ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳನ್ನ ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಒಂಭತ್ತೂವರೆ ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ರೇಡಿಯೋದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿತ್ತರಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವ ಲಾಟರಿಯ ಫಲಿತಾಂಶವನ್ನು ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿಸುವ ಕ್ಲಾರ್ಕ್ ಮತ್ತು ಪೋಸ್ಟ್ ಮ್ಯಾನ್ ಗೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು ನಿಮಿಷ ಇದ್ದು, ಅಷ್ಟು ಹೊತ್ತು ನೀವು ಕನಸು ಕಟ್ಟಕೆ ಅಡ್ಡಿ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎನ್ನುವ ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರು ಈ ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಗ್ರೀಕ್ ಕೋರಸ್ನಂತೆ ಇದ್ದಾನೆ. ಪುರಾಣದ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ನಂಬಿ ಇವನು ವಾಸ್ತವಿಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಮರೆಯುವವ. ಭೂತ ಮತ್ತು ಭವಿಷ್ಯತ್ ಕಾಲಗಳನ್ನು ನಂಬಿ ಕಷ್ಟನಷ್ಟಗಳ ವರ್ತಮಾನ ಕಾಲವನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕರ ಚಿತ್ರ ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಎದ್ದು ನಿಂತಿದೆ. ನಾಟಕವು ಮೊದಲಿಂದ ಕೊನೆಯವರೆಗೂ ಪಾತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ವಾತಾವರಣಗಳ ಸಹಜತೆಗಾಗಿ ಜನರ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿಯುವುದು. ವಾಸ್ತವಿಕ ಜಗತ್ತಿಗೂ ಕಥೆಗೂ ಸಂಬಂಧವಿಲ್ಲದ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳ (ಶೂಟಿಂಗ್) ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರು ಈ ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಗ್ರೀಕ್ ಕೋರಸ್ನಂತೆ ಇದ್ದಾನೆ. ಪುರಾಣದ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ನಂಬಿ ಇವನು ವಾಸ್ತವಿಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಮರೆಯುವವ ಭೂತ ಮತ್ತು ಭವಿಷ್ಯತ್ ಕಾಲಗಳನ್ನು ನಂಬಿ ಕಷ್ಟನಷ್ಟಗಳ ವರ್ತಮಾನ ಕಾಲವನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕರ ಚಿತ್ರ ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಎದ್ದು ನಿಂತಿದೆ. ನಾಟಕವು ಮೊದಲಿಂದ ಕೊನೆಯವರೆಗೂ ಪಾತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ವಾತಾವರಣಗಳ ಸಹಜತೆಗಾಗಿ ಜನರ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿಯುವುದು. ವಾಸ್ತವಿಕ ಜಗತ್ತಿಗೂ ಕಥೆಗೂ ಸಂಬಂಧವಿಲ್ಲದ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳ (ಶೂಟಿಂಗ್) ಸಾಂಕೇತಿಕತೆಯ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸಮರ್ಪಕವಾಗಿದೆ.
Ramachandra Deva`s play [Rathamusala] worked at various levels, speaking of the contemporary times even as it spoke of a distant past. The multi-dimensional play speaks of the cruelties of the war-mongering first world countries all set to devastate the third world. At the same time the play also focuses on tragedies, both at the personal and community levels, though it is not an easy task to present this multi-layered text with all its connotations through visuals.
Ramachandra Deva has closely observed different kinds of perversions in modern life. His writings depict the details of this life and its impact on modern civilization. It is very important to note that his play Rathamusala recognized neocolonialism and its consequences long back, when it was hardly a topic of discussion.

“ಪುರೋಹಿತರ ನೆಚ್ಚಿ ಪಶ್ಜಿಮ ಬುದ್ಡಿ” ಯಾಗುವುದರ ಬದಲು, ನಮ್ಮ ನಾಡಿನ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ, ನಿಗೂಢಗಳನ್ನು ಶೋಧಿಸುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಸಕ್ತರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಮಶೆ ಯನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಸಬಲ್ಲ, ಸಂವಾದಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೊಸ ತಿರುವು ನೀಡಬಲ್ಲ ಸಾಮಥ್ಯ ವಿರುವ ಹೊಸ ತಲೆಮಾರಿನ ವಿವಳ ವಿಮಶಕರಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವ ಒಬ್ಬರು.
ರಾಮಚಂದ್ರ ದೇವ ಅವರು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಕತೆಗಳನ್ನೂ ಕವನಗಳನ್ನೂ ಬರೆದವರು. ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೆ ಶೇಕ್ಸ್ಪಿಯರ್ನ ನಾಟಕಗಳನ್ನು ತಂದವರು. ಶೇಕ್ಸ್ಪಿಯರ್ನ ನಾಟಕಗಳು ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುವುದು ಎಂದರೆ, ಹೇಗೆ ಒಂದು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಗೆ ಅನುವಾದಗೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಎಂಬ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆಯನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡಿದವರು. ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ವಿಮರ್ಶೆಯು ಅವರ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮವಲ್ಲ. ಇದು ಒದು ಗುಣವಾಗಿದ್ದು ಅವರ ಲೇಖನಗಳ ಲವಲವಿಕೆಯ ಶೈಲಿಗೂ ಕ್ಲೀಷೆಯಲ್ಲದ ಭಾಷೆಗೂ ಹೊಸತನಕ್ಕೂ ಕಾರಣವಾಗಿದೆ.
ಡಾ. ದೇವ ಅವರು ಹೊಸ ಬಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಯೋಚಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ; ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಹೊಸದಾಗಿ ಯೋಚಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆ ಹೊಸ ಯೋಚನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಳೆಯದರೊಂದಿಗಿನ ರಚನಾತ್ಮಕ ಸಂವಾದ ಪ್ರಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಕೂಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವರ ಕಾಳಜಿಯ ಸ್ವರೂಪವೂ ಮಾತಿಗಿಂತ ಮಾತುಕಫೆಹೆ ಒತ್ತುಕೊಡುವುದರಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ನಿಶ್ಚಯಗೊಂಡದ್ದಾಗಿದೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದಲೇ ಅದು ತನ್ನಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ತಾನೇ ಒಂದು ಸಾಂಸ್ಕ್ೃತಿಕ ಮುಖಾಮುಖಿಂಋನ್ನು ಸಾಧೆಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ಮಾನವತೆಯ ಆಧರ್ಶತನವನ್ನು ಸಾಂದ್ರವಾದ ತನ್ನ ಜಟಿಲ ವಿನ್ಯಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಟ್ಟೊಟ್ಟಿಗೇ ಅಭಿನೀತಗೂಳಿಸುತ್ತಾ, ಓದುಗನ ಮೇಲೆ ದಟ್ಟ ಪರಿಣಾಮ ಬೀರುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ನಾಟಕವನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಓದಿ ಸಂತೋಷ ಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ, ನನ್ನ ಆ ಅನುಭವವನು ಬಿಚ್ಚು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ, ಉತ್ಸಾಹದಿಂದ ಸಹ್ದಯರಲ್ಲಿ ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ಾವಕಾಶ ನಾನು ಬಲಸಿಕೂಂಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಕನ್ನಡದ ಸದ್ಯದ ಅನಾರೋಗ್ಯದ ಮತ್ತು ಅಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಕ ವಾತವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದನ್ನು ಕಂಡಾಗ, ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿಂದ (ಅಂಥದನ್ನು ನಾನು ಬರೆದಿಲ್ಲವಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಮುಜುಗುರವನ್ನೂ ಗೆದ್ದುಕೊಂಡು) ಅ ಕ್ೃತಿಯ ಬಗೆಗೆ ಮಾತಾಡಬೇಕಾದ್ದೂ ಅತ್ಯಗತ್ಯ ಎಂದು ನಂಬಿದವ ನಾನು. ಗೆಳೆಯ ರಾಮಚಂದ್ರ ದೇವ ಾವರ ಈ ನಾಟಕ ಓದಿದ ಸಹೃದಯರು, ಅ ಬಳಿಕ ನನ್ನ ಮಾತು ಓದಿದಾಗ, ನನ್ನ ಉತ್ಸಾಹವನ್ನು, ಾದರ ಔಚಿತ್ಯವನ್ನೂ ಅಥ೯ಮಾದಿಲೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆಂಬುದೂ ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿದೆ.
ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆಂದೇ ಬರೆದ ನಾಟಕಗಳು ಬಹಳ ಕಡಿಮೆ. ವಿಮಶೆ೯ಯ ಅನುಕೂಲಕ್ಕಾದರೂ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ, ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ, ಪೌರಾಣಿಕಗಳೆಂದು ವಿಭಜನೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುಲಾಗದಷ್ಟು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ನಾಟಕಗಳು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿವೆ…. ಇದಕ್ಕೂ ಹಿಂದೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಬರೆದಿರುವ ಕೆಲವು ಪೌರಾಣಿಕ, ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ, ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ನಾಟಕಗಳಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದುಲ್ಲ. ಅದರೆ, ಮಕ್ಕಳ ನಾಟಕಗಳಿಗೆ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಗಳಾಗಲಾರವು ಎಂಬ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ ಾವುಗಳನ್ನು ಕೈಬಿಟ್ತದ್ದೇನೆ. ಇಈಗಲೂ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ರಂಗಭೂಮಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪ್ರಚಲಿತವಾಗದಿರುವಂತಹ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮ. ಪ್ರೈಮರಿ, ಹೈಸ್ಕೂಲುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಕೂಲು ದುನಾಚರಣೆಗೆಂದು ದೊಡ್ಡವರ ನಾಟಕಗಳನ್ನೇ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಂದ ಆಡಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಗಳನೇ ನಾವು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ನೋಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಇಂತಹ ಸಂದಿಗ್ಡ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲೂ ಕೆಲವು ಉತ್ತಮ ನಾಟಕಗಳು ಇತ್ತಿಚಿಗೆ ಬಂದಿವೆ…. ಈ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ನಾಟಕಗಖ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇರೆಯಾಗಿ ನಲ್ಲಬಲ್ಲಂೆಹ ಶಕ್ತಿಯಿರುವ ಎರದು ನಾಟಕಗಳು – ಕೀತಿ೯ನಾಥ ಕುತ೯ಕೋಟಯವರ ಆ ಮನಿ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಮಚಂದ್ರ ದೇವರ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಕಾಡಿಗೆ ಹೋದದ್ದು ನಾಟಕಗಳು. ಈ ಎರಡೂ ನಾಟಕಗಳಿಗಿದೆ. ದೊಡ್ಡವರಿಗೂ ಅಥವಾ ದೊಡ್ಡವರಿಗೇ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಅಥ೯ವಾಗುವ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಯಿರುವಂತಹ ನಾಟಕಗಳು…. ರಾಮಚಂದ್ರ ದೇವರ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಕಾಡಿಗೆ ಹೋದದ್ದು ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಲ್ಯಾವಸ್ಥೆಯಿಂದ ಹರೆಯಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾಲಿಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಪುಟ್ತಯ ಅನುಭವಗಳು ಚಿತ್ರಿತವಾಗಿವೆ… ಕೊಲೆಯ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದ, ಅರಣ್ಯದ ಪ್ರಪಂಚವನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಕ್ರೂರಿಯಾದಂತೆ ತೋರುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಅಷ್ಟುಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ ಪುಟ್ಟಗಾಗಿ ಹುಡುಕಾದಿದ ತಂದೆ-ತಾಯಿಯರು ಅಳೆಯನ್ನು ಕಾಡಿನಿಂದ ನಾಡಿಗೆ ಕರೆದುಕೊಡು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಪುಟ್ಟ ಬಿಕ್ಕಿ ಅಳುವಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಟಕ ಮುಗಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ನಾಟಕವನು ಮಕ್ಕಳೇ ಅಭಿನಯಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ದೊಡ್ಡವರೂ ನೋಡಬಹುದಾದಂತಹ ಅಥ೯ ಪರಂಪರೆಯಿರುವ ನಾಟಕ ವಿದು.
ನಮ್ಮ ಜನರ ಜಡತ್ವವನ್ನೂ ಮೌಢ್ಯವನ್ನೂ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯದ ನೇಣಿನ ಪ್ರಭಾವವನ್ನೂ ಇದಕ್ಕಿಂತ [“ದಂಗೆಯ ಪ್ರಕರಣ” ಕ್ಕಿಂತ] ಪ್ರಭಾವಯುತವಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸುವುದು ಕಷ್ಟ

In his moogela mattu itara kathegalu (1985) Ramachandra deva seeks to return to the indian traditional shaped by the Panchatantra, the bethala stories, the tamayana and mahabaratha. In an interesting preface he argues that this tradition can reach out to the world of the imagination. These works make no difference between the world of fact and the world of the imagination. A ravana with 10heads is a real, a maaricha who transforms himself in a lovely deer is as real, as the chariot –driver. These works can rise above time. They are not confined to any particular period or place and they also create a world in which animals and birds are on the dame plane as human beings, they speak and act and teat men and women as belonging to their world. It is one homogeneous world of all creations.
Listing these characteristics of the ancient works of this land, Ramachandra deva seeks, in d=his collection, to lead the story back to that tradition. As an illustration of Ramachandra deva’s technique and achievement one may choose a long story here – jeevapakshiya kathe, it is a story about the bird of life. It narrates how, after brahma had created the world, ishwara destroyed everything and how finally he yielded to the entreaties of brahma and Vishnu to some extent. He told them that there was one bird, the bird of life, which would appear to every man in a different shape. He who captures it will transcend destruction. The story goes on to speak of a couple in the modern world. At first they are happy, then, the demands that the husband’s work makes on him begins to tell. There is no laughter in the house, and one day the wife runs away from the husband, with her lover, taking with her the child she had borne him. This story sets repeated in the narration about the old man who tells the story of the three gods – he had lost is wife and child to a lover. Then comes the narration of the plight of condemned prisoner, as he recalls, in his lonely cell, the murder he had committed and pines for one more chance to start a new life, the bird of life enters as a beam of light even as he clutches it the doors are opening to lead him to the gallows. At the heart of the story is man, not any particular individual but man, who has eyes but does not see, who turns away in ignorance from the road to happiness stretching before his very eyes. Put this way it sounds bald and patronizing. Three stories meet in the story itself, those of the first couple, of the grandfather and of the condemned man and the frame is provided by the mythological story of the three gods. The controlled tenderness, steering clear of sentimentality gives life to the narration. There is another absorbing story of a lovely girl with a star in her hair. It is the story of a bewitching beauty who becomes the inhabitant of two worlds and retires to live and die in loneliness. It is curious that while in his preface deva harks back to the indian tradition, the title story should be reminiscent of kafka’s celebrated metamorphosis. there are differences between the two stories but the idea of being cut off from the outside world and the exposure of the meanness of the family are common to the two stories while in this and other stories I have mentioned the reader’s journey is facilitated by the right kind of signposts, I am not surethat stories like yaathre and aparadhi naanalla can communicate their central experience equally effectively. While the drift of samsara is clear one wonders if the experience is significant enough. Moogela is an interesting experiment. It should figure in any discussion of the modern kannada short story
SAMAGRA KATHEGALU(COLLECTED SHORT STORIES)IN KANNADA Ramachandra Deva’s “Dangeya Prakarana”, [English translation of this story is published in From Cauvery to Godavari, an anthology of modern Kannada short stories brought out by Penguin Books] written in the beginning years of his literary career, is already recognized as a great short story and is included in many representative anthologies. His second collection has an important fantasy story “Mugela” in it. Ramachandra Deva hastried to bring Indian fantasy tradition into hisstories. His “Resort” [English translation is published in Indian Literature, Sept.-Oct., 2010, no. 259] is one of the great stories of the world…. Great literature understands reality, and helps us decide what is right and what is wrong. Only a writer who wishes the welfare of the whole society can include the entirety of it in his consciousness. Deva is very important because he is a writer of such achievements.
MACBETH and HAMLET (TRANSLATIONS OF SHAKESPEARE’S PLAYS) Ramachandra Deva has called his work an attempt towards the translation of Macbeth. But, one should say that this attempt is very successful, very creative. After P. Lankesh’s translations of Sophocles published a few years ago, this is the most creative, powerful translation of an European classic in Kannada. It is a re-creation.
If Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a challenge to the world actors, Deva’s Hamlet is a challenge to the Kannada actors.
Deva has developed a fruitful relation with Shakespeare. Apart from his influential translations, he has also researched on the way Shakespeare is internalized in Kannada Like the clowns of Shakespeare’s plays, the clown of Yakshagana of coastal Karnataka too is not restricted by courtly manners. He does not play to the tunes of kings. He opposes kings with his common sense, clever speech, and knowledge of the world. He represents people. Deva, in Rathamusala, has searched for the normality and wisdom of the common people which remains outside the perversions and systematized cruelties of the modern polity. This is seen in Vidushaka of the play within the play
MATADUVAMARA, COLLECTED POEMS, 1963-2004 IN KANNADA The first thing that strikes me in Ramachandra Deva’s poetry is his originality
Ramachandra Deva has written less, but achieved more. His achievements both in prose and poetry during the last four decades are ofsuperior kind. His Mataduva Mara, published in 2003, has all the thirty two poems he has written so far. The title poem Mataduva Mara is the longest in the collection and it is Deva’s ambitious work. This 41 page long poem is of epic type. This tries to capture, in one sweep, the breakdown of values in the political/social/ religious/cultural fieldsin contemporary India in the background of globalization and neocolonialism. This poem, which runs in eight parts, has a coherent story. It is different from the poetry of GopalakrishnaAdiga or T.S. Eliot. Unlike their poetry wherein images become important, Deva’s model makes use of a story. Even though its structure resembles that ofmodern poetry, it is obviousthat Deva istrying to go beyond Adiga and Eliot and is making attempts to create a new form, a new poetry.
